Perhaps the accelerated success of HFC as an organization and individual players is best summed up in the words of Coach Davis: "We believe that the success of our kids can be attributed first and foremost to the grace of God. Our foundational scripture is Colossians 3:23, 'Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.' We are passionate about our kids playing hard as unto the Lord. Secondly, their ability to harken (listen to obey), work hard, and buy into our system."
Coach Davis never underestimates the support of parents in the equation. As a matter of fact, his mission is to partner with parents to prepare kids for life. This mission was personified in the life of a young player. When he initially came to HFC he had significant confidence issues. Every time he would miss a basket, he would drop his head and simply shut down in the middle of the play. After working diligently to encourage this individual to overcome the lack-of-confidence mentality, with the support of other coaches, they were able to witness him overcome this issue. They taught him that a short memory is required in the game of basketball -- "If you do something, forget about it. If you do something bad, forget about it." The player began to understand that there are many moments within one game just as there are many moments within a twenty-four hour period. One moment in time did not define him. The key is to stay in the game. Throughout the remainder of his Warrior's career at HFC, he shared how he overcame several life challenges as a result of this principle. This lesson will not only serve this player throughout his basketball days, but throughout his entire life.
Parents who are new to HFC notice immediately that Coach genuinely cares for each of his players. He calls them "family," and he means it. Beyond HFC, alumni players regularly reach out to Coach Davis because they know they are family. He truly wants to prepare his players for life.
While this family camaraderie is the most rewarding part of his coaching experience, Coach has led his teams to success on the court quickly for such a young program. In the first year, HFC advance two out of three teams to play in Gold Ball games. In the second year, the varsity boys' team won a national title.
Just as his teams are recognized nationally, his players are noticed as well. Seven players have received offers to play college ball. Five players are currently playing at the college level. It is apparent that his system works, on and off the court.
Here's what former players say about their time with HFC:
A life lesson I learned from Coach Davis is mess up-make up. No matter how many times you mess up, never hang your head and give up. Give your all to make up for your mistakes. ~ Liberty Hill
Playing with Coach Davis wasn't just about basketball. Coach groomed his players to be men on and off the court. The most memorable moment for me was the whole season that I met a group of guys, playing for HFC. Now I call them my brothers. Coach told me one thing that's helped my life tremendously. "A man does what he has to do, when he has to do it." ~ D'Marius Dobbins
One of my memorable moments while playing for Coach Davis in particular was one practice when we were talking about life. This was around the time where all the racial tension was high. He went around to all of the players and asked us what race we were. However, most of us told him what actual race we were. Coach responded that he was human. It was just a cool moment to have everyone together at that time and experience that moment. Life lessons learned would literally be almost everything. Every moment you're with Coach Davis he's always teaching a life lesson. One that stuck with me the most is that most people go to their graves with unrealized dreams and unrealized potential. ~ Elijah Mason
Coach always said that he's teaching life and playing basketball. The two go hand in hand. We just have to open our eyes to see it. He taught us to strive for excellence on and off the court. He taught us the importance of courtesy. Courtesy takes shape in the way we carry ourselves and how we do what we do. Being punctual, respecting others, not repaying evil for evil, taking responsibility for our actions... During one practice, Coach stopped us all and asked each of us what race we were. Everyone answered with their ethnicity until one player said, "Human. I am of the human race." That was what Coach was looking for. He doesn't care if you're black, white, red, or even an odd shade of blue. What matters to Coach is that we are made in the image of God and that makes us all brothers and sisters. ~ Samuel Tardibono
I learned many things from Coach. Don't waste your time. If you're going to the gym, work hard. If you're gonna go to class, learn hard. Don't do things half-hearted. "Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men." Colossians 3:23 Make the most out of the time you're given. ~ Braxton Banks
Over the years I played for Coach Davis, he taught me not only how to play the game of basketball but he also taught me the value of a strong work ethic and attention to detail. Most importantly, he led by example - living a life glorifying to the Lord. These are things among many others that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. ~ Riley Banks
Coach Davis taught me a lesson I'll never forget - to work hard. Coach has pushed me as a person not only on the court but in life. And this is a lesson I will forever cherish. ~ Chloe Brown
In my four years of playing for Coach Davis and HFC, I learned a huge amount about the game of basketball and had a lot of on-the-court success. But the life lessons I learned may be even more remarkable. The main thing Coach taught me that sticks with me to this day is mental toughness and battling through adversity. A scripture he often quoted is John 16:33. "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! (God) has overcome the world." He would follow this by saying how God already told us we will go through things in the world. It is our job to react in the right manner and never give up. "Adversity introduces a man to himself." Coach taught me to make sure I react to different situations the right way, not only in basketball, but in life as well. ~ Traejon Davis
